Historically the world of tribal art collecting all too often has shown a lack of concern over identifying the authors of the works they collect or trade in. There are, of course, some notable exceptions such as the work of Adrian Gerbrands and others which will be discussed below. Despite recent very welcome attempts to acknowledge and redress this failing by both scholars and some auction houses, it remains problematic.
