OAS FORUM – Adelaide , 26 & 27 November 2022

03/07/2022 By Noelle Rathmell-Stiels

Invitation to the

Oceanic Art Society 2022 Forum at the South Australian Museum

Australia in the Pacific: Cultures Past, Present & Future

The OAS and SAM are pleased to invite you to a dynamic two-day forum in the iconic Pacific Cultures Gallery of the South Australian Museum. Featuring leading experts on Pacific and Australian Aboriginal art and cultures this symposium will inform, entertain and intellectually delight participants. Join us as we travel from the jungles of New Guinea, through the deserts of northern Australia to the home of one of the greatest collections of Pacific and Aboriginal art on the planet. Meet like-minded art enthusiasts and mingle with some of the greatest authorities in their respective fields.

Talks will cover traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Pacific art and the evolving role of museums in contemporary society. Speakers include Dr. Andrew Moutu, Director of the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery; Mr David Rathman, Ambassador for the Aboriginal Art and Cultures Centre in Adelaide and internationally recognized local experts Dr Philip Jones and Dr John Carty from the South Australian Museum.

On Saturday an early evening Pacific Island Dance performance will be organised by the Pacific Islands Council of South Australia on the grounds of the University of Adelaide, which is adjacent to SAM. The Forum Banquet will then be held in Adelaide’s new luxury hotel, the Crowne Plaza.

Full programme details, including ticket prices and early-bird special rates will be available shortly via mail chimp and on the OAS website www.oceanicartsociety.org.au , but prospective attendees are encouraged to make accommodation and travel bookings early as November is a busy time of year in Adelaide with major events scheduled. Suggested hotels are the Crowne Plaza, Majestic Roof Garden Hotel and the Pullman Hotel, which are all close to the Museum.

If you are interested in attending please inform Jim Elmslie at [email protected] and we will send you further information on the Forum as it becomes available.
