Oceanic Art Society Lecture meeting July 30th Lecture: To be announced
our last meeting: Wednesday 28th May 2008 Venue: Elwyn Lynn Conference Centre, College of Fine Arts, Selwyn Street Paddington NSW Time: 6.30 pm refreshments, 7.00pm lecture Entry: Members $10.00, non members $15.00 Lecture: Artifact Collecting and Trading in Papua New Guinea Speakers: Chris Boylan - field collector and international tribal art dealer Robin Hodgson - former trader and dealer in PNG artifacts Notes: Chris Boylan has been making field trips to PNG, originally to collect artworks of that country for the Paulian Society's tribal art gallery in Sydney and in later years on his own behalf. Chris continues to make several field trips each year to collect traditional objects and cultural background information. He also travels extensively selling his collections in the world's great tribal markets today (Paris, San Francisco etc…). Robin Hodgson founded the Melanesian Arts Centre in Lae, PNG in 1972 and spent the next thirty years developing it, buying locally and selling worldwide. She sold the Arts Centre in 2002 as a going concern. Robin thoroughly enjoyed dealing with the myriad of handmade objects of the diverse cultures of PNG and her contact with the equally diverse local people. Her buying trips took her frequently to the Sepik River and the Trobriand Islands where one could never be certain what lay ahead despite the best laid plans, or what treasures would be found. |
